Russell HR has provided work experience and internships for young people for a number of years. We try hard to ensure that the time they spend with us helps them adjust to the workplace and builds their skills in a really useful and practical way. Jack Anderson came to us earlier this year on the Santander sponsored scheme run by the University of Northampton. Here he reflects on his time with us.
Completing an internship has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Before talking about what I’ve learnt and the ins and outs of what my internship entailed it’s probably best to start looking simplistically at what doing an internship did for me and what it could do for you.
The first thing I said to myself before getting an internship was that “I need experience”. This was regardless of whether it was paid or unpaid. I still maintain that stance now. I would complete this internship again and again with or without the payment that came with it. That should help to gauge how important the element of experience is over payment when it comes to doing an internship and highlights how good the experience was.
As a student who hasn’t had much work experience other than in retail as a part time employee for a few hours a week, the role and demand of the internship came as quite a surprise. I feel the internship has improved me as a person for the better, particularly going forward into the future. The internship exposed me to working an eight-hour day (something that I hadn’t done before) while pressuring me to manage my Internship with my University work including exams, assignments and a dissertation. Having now completed all of these I feel that I would be able to go through the process again with absolutely no worries. The traits and skills I have learnt and developed during my time at Russell HR have helped to enhance both my marketing knowledge and skills.
As already mentioned, before doing an internship I had no marketing experience to take forward into a job post-graduation. This is something that a lot of, if not all employers require - particularly at graduate entry level. Working as an intern changed this and I can confidently express my knowledge and ability to carry out numerous marketing related tasks and functions.
While working as a marketing intern I’ve gained experience and knowledge in a variety of areas including social media, web marketing, researching, advertising and designing. By using social media I’ve learnt to appropriately and effectively interact with potential clients and customers to maintain and promote the brand and services of Russell HR. By using Photoshop and similar software I’ve created advertisements and banners on multiple platforms suitable for customers and clients. Researching clients and directories has helped endlessly with my researching skills and ability to compile information quickly and precisely. I’ve also learnt how to input client data using CRM systems and the importance of inputting information correctly.
In terms of personal skills my IT skills have improved due to the role of the job, as well as an increasing my confidence and my ability to communicate effectively through various channels.
The experience of being an intern at Russell HR has been fantastic. Every day is a challenge with something new to look forward to and learn from. Russell HR is fast paced and dynamic and all of the staff are great to work with. I really recommend anybody to take an internship here, be it in marketing or HR the experience will be worthwhile and stand you in good stead for the future.
The team joins me in wishing Jack all the best for the future.
