Pre-pandemic, there was too much choice in paint. Way too much. If I was trying to make a decorating decision I would pad up and down the paint aisles in DIY shops, getting less and less sure, and more and more grumpy.

Government figures suggest that around 10% of the population (about 6.3 million people) have dyslexia. Some employees have dyslexia and are undiagnosed. Some people will try to conceal it. You can only help an employee if you understand the nature of the condition he or she has.

It happens all the time. An underperforming employee is about to be taken through the discipline procedure on grounds of incapability and they don’t like it. Rather than showing a degree of accountability and accepting that things need to change, frequently they submit a lengthy grievance all about how the manager is showing a lack of respect.

I’ve done a few favours for people recently. Some of them thanked me, more of them didn’t. It’s interesting how few people express gratitude, even when you’ve helped them out of a hole. Thanking people for their contribution to your business is not just courteous and appropriate, it can also have a remarkable impact.
